Hot weather and newborns

Updated: Sep 30, 2023

Hot weather can be challenging for newborns because they are more sensitive to temperature changes and have difficulty regulating their body temperature. It is important to keep them cool and comfortable during hot weather. Here are some tips:

1. Keep the room temperature moderate: Maintain a comfortable indoor temperature between 68°F and 72°F (20°C and 22°C). Use fans or air conditioning if necessary.

2. Dress them appropriately: Dress your newborn in lightweight, breathable clothing made of natural fabrics like cotton. Avoid overdressing or covering them with heavy blankets.

3. Provide shade: If you're outdoors, keep your baby in the shade to protect them from direct sunlight. Use a stroller with a sunshade or a lightweight blanket to create shade.

4. Stay hydrated: Offer your baby frequent feeds if they are breastfeeding or provide them with formula or water, depending on their age and your pediatrician's guidance.

5. Use a cool mist humidifier: A cool mist humidifier can help keep the air in your baby's room moist, which can make it more comfortable for them during hot weather.

6. Avoid direct sunlight: Keep your newborn away from direct sunlight, especially during the hottest parts of the day. If you need to go outside, use a wide-brimmed hat and lightweight, breathable clothing to protect them from the sun.

Remember, if you have any concerns about your newborn's well-being in hot weather, it's always a good idea to consult with your pediatrician for personalized advice.
